How do we stock our food room?

On arrival @Storehouse in Coleman Street you may find a queue near to our opening times, as people wait to register their names with us, and receive their food voucher. After registration, you can join the queue to the food room with our other guests or you can go straight to the café and have some food and refreshments.

The produce we have available for you to choose from in our food room, is collected during the week from a range of different retailers around Southend. We collect them in the evening before they are available to you or the same day, depending on when you visit us. This means that the date on the packaging will be at the sell-by-date or one day beyond. We try to avoid distributing food that has expired beyond the use by date. To keep food as fresh as possible, any produce requiring refrigeration (ambient temperatures) is kept in our fridge. Produce that can be frozen, is placed in our freezers, as soon as we return to the @Storehouse, and anything else is kept in a cool, dry environment to keep it fresh. We also have a variety of tinned produce and packet goods.

You receive 5 items from those we store on the shelving, and can select as much fresh fruit, vegetables and bread, that we have available. We ask that you think about others as you select your items, not taking so much produce as to leave others without any.

In our café, we have a range of sandwiches, cakes, tea & coffee each session, but we often have some hot food cooked from fresh ingredients, by our chef on duty… you are very welcome to stay as long as you wish, meet with friends and seek advice from staff regarding the services we can signpost you towards.

We may also have visitors from various agencies, who support people in their various circumstances. Family Mosaic, Family Action, Children’s Centres… can all provide next-step support to help you with your choices. Each Friday, we show a movie with a theme linked to Christianity, as the Storehouse is part of Southend Vineyard Church. Staff and volunteers would love to chat with you and even pray with you if necessary, as we believe in being good listeners and offering pastoral care, as best we can, through friendship and being in relationship with anyone seeking sanctuary in the Storehouse, especially when times are hard.

On the last Sunday of each month, we have a Worship Service, where we reflect on what God is doing with us as a community in the Storehouse. There is usually a time of worship, a short talk, a time for prayer and ministry and a great Curry… there is no better way to celebrate what God is doing by spending time together and eating together.
